After several weeks of marriage, things were going well, in Andrew’s opinion. Life was falling satisfyingly into place.

His mother was happier than he had ever seen her. She had told everyone from the upstairs maids to the scullery maids that she could not wait for more grandchildren to come into the family.

They would not be coming, but he found it impossible to tell her so. Luckily, Annabeth and George kept her smiling.

His mother was delighted to be called Grandmother.

He was charmed when Annabeth called him Papa.

Lilly was happy. She was the proud possessor of two wardrobes full of gowns, and even had a few suitors to show off her gowns to.

Annabeth was healthy. Clara vowed it had been a long time since she had seen her with such a sparkle in her eyes, so much happy energy in her step.

George’s favourite thing to do was spend time on the farm with Bosing and the animals, which was a good, healthy occupation. However, it was now time he became enrolled in a proper school. There were a few nearby, but more in London.

Which was one of the reasons that this warm, sunny morning found him and Clara aboard a train, chugging towards the city. He had business to conduct during their stay there, but they would also look at schools for George.

Andrew looked forward to showing Clara a bit of fun. It had been years since she’d had the pleasure of attending the opera or the theatre. And, even though his cook was superb, he meant to take his wife to some of London’s finest eating establishments so that she could wear her new gowns. To Andrew’s way of thinking, it had been too long since she’d enjoyed the life she had been born to.

The train ride from the village to London was short. Not even two hours. Conversation between them never lagged. It was always interesting. They spoke often of the children, who day by day, felt more a joy than a responsibility.

‘I have plans for our evenings in London, Clara, but I hope you will be able to find something to do in the mornings. You will enjoy being pampered by the staff, I trust. You deserve it after what you have been through in the past couple of years.’

‘Truly, Andrew, being pampered seems a frivolous waste of time. What will you be doing in the mornings? I believe I will be far more interested in that.’

‘Tomorrow I will visit one of my ships which is in port,’ he said. ‘But there are several shops in town which might interest you.’

‘I’m sure I have frequented them all in the past. The last thing I require is a new gown.’

‘A new pair of boots? A shawl? A bonnet?’

‘If you find shopping so stimulating, perhaps you should accompany me?’

That sounded like a form of torture. Men conducted business and ladies shopped. It was the way of society.

‘I see from your frown that you do not wish to explore the shops any more than I do.
